Ready to become more yourself than ever before?
In individual Personality-Focused Therapy sessions, you’ll move beyond a surface-level reading of online personality test results and dive deeply into understanding why you think, behave, and feel in the ways that you do. You’ve heard people say: nobody’s perfect. In these sessions, you’ll see yourself become perfectly you. Sessions will help to improve mood, reduce anxiety, boost self-esteem, enhance relationships, and much more.
The Therapy
Adult individual therapy sessions are for clients aged 18 years old and up.
Personality-Focused Therapy (PFT) is a new therapy developed by Dr. McMaster. The focus in PFT is first on understanding the make-up of your personality (e.g., its structure, its strengths and weaknesses). Second, you will use what you discover about your wiring to play to your natural strengths while also caring well for your natural weaknesses. The goal of PFT is not to turn you into a different person, but to help you become more yourself. You’ll know yourself so well that you will feel equipped to face any challenge that life throws at you.
PFT does not require an enormous amount of time on homework or an undetermined long-term financial commitment from you, as can be the case with other therapies, and clients typically experience positive results after just a few sessions. The focus in sessions will be on solutions, not problems, so you will never be asked to bring up past events if you do not think it will be helpful.
Dr. McMaster is a Christian psychologist, and PFT is grounded in Christian psychological theories of personality and psychotherapy as well as secular psychological theories that Dr. McMaster finds compatible with the Christian worldview. Christian clients looking for a distinctly Christian therapy will feel right at home discussing Scripture and faith in their PFT sessions. However, this is not a requirement, so clients who are not Christians can also benefit from PFT.
What to expect
When you are ready to make an appointment, you will be directed to schedule your intake session online and to complete prerequisite paperwork. An intake session is 55 minutes long and will focus on obtaining background information about you, answering questions about the therapy, reviewing policies and procedures, and determining if therapy at the practice will be a good fit for you given your history, needs, and goals. The session after your intake will be your first PFT session.
PFT consists of a core phase of treatment in which you will complete a personality assessment, undergo the key therapeutic intervention, and get intensive feedback. Core sessions are spread out over time and completed in 6 weekly or bi-weekly sessions.
After completing the core phase of treatment, it is typically recommended that you enter into a monthly maintenance phase, where you meet every 4-6 weeks for tune-ups until you feel comfortable maintaining your gains from therapy without the frequent support. However, a maintenance phase may not be needed if you’re feeling confident applying what you have learned in between sessions during the core phase. After the monthly maintenance phase, you may opt to remain in treatment for tune-ups every 12 weeks (once per quarter) or to complete treatment and be discharged from care at the practice.
Sessions will be held via video chat on a secure portal made specifically for teletherapy. You will not be required to bring anything to your session. All paperwork will be completed before your session online via the secure client portal. Read over the FAQ and Rates & Insurance pages for more information.
