Setting effective boundaries is never easy. The Better Boundaries model will make the whole process simple.
This group is designed to help you set boundaries that stick around and actually work. In this group, you will see yourself improve in three areas: your understanding of what makes a good boundary (knowledge), your practice of setting boundaries with others in your daily life (skills), and your capacity to tolerate the discomfort that comes with setting better boundaries (abilities).
The Therapy
Adult group therapy sessions are for clients aged 18 years old and up.
This group therapy is comprised of two components. The first is an educational component. Clients will be taught a basic framework for how to think about boundaries in every kind of relationship. Evidence from literature in psychology will be integrated into sessions to help you understand the good reasons to make the changes you need to make to set better boundaries. Because this is offered in a group format, clients will have the opportunity to learn from the experiences that other clients have had with setting boundaries.
The second component is therapeutic. Clients will receive support in applying what they have learned about boundaries to improve their mental health and relationships with others. The specific form of therapy that will be used is called Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). SFBT has been found to be just as effective in treating a wide range of problems as other therapies and always in fewer sessions. It also does not require an enormous amount of time or an undetermined long-term financial commitment from you, as can be the case with other therapies. Clients typically experience positive results after a few sessions.
What to Expect
When you are ready to make an appointment, you will be directed to schedule your intake session online and to complete prerequisite paperwork. Although you will be doing group therapy, your intake session will be completed privately in an individual session. An intake session is 55 minutes long and will focus on obtaining background information about you, answering questions about the therapy, reviewing policies and procedures, and determining if group therapy at the practice will be a good fit for you given your history, needs, and goals. The session after your intake will be your first Better Boundaries group session.
A Better Boundaries group session is made up of two parts: education and therapy. In each session, you’ll learn and discuss the Better Boundaries educational material and you’ll receive direct therapeutic support and intensive feedback in applying the educational material to specific issues in your daily life.
This is an open group, which means you can drop in as often or as infrequently as you need to. This also means new clients can join the group at any time and not worry about having missed prior sessions.
Sessions will be held via video chat on a secure portal made specifically for teletherapy. You will not be required to bring anything to your sessions. Read over the FAQ and Rates & Insurance pages for more information on session logistics and payment.
